From the Appalachian Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico, the state of Alabama offers diverse settings for an adventurous camping trip. With 23 state parks featuring over 2,600 campsites, there is a place to camp for everyone. Many parks offer primitive campsites for the diehard camper, while all but one provide modern campsites with RV hookups for those wanting a camping experience without completely roughing it. Cheaha State Park in Delta, Alabama
At Cheaha State Park, choose from one of four campgrounds. Two are full hook-up campsites – Mountain Top Campground and Cheaha Lake Campground. The Picnic Trail Campground and Bunker Loop Campground are primitive campsites with locations for tent-only camping. Campers at any of the four campgrounds can enjoy various activities throughout the park including swimming and fishing in Lake Cheaha and hiking the trails along Mount Cheaha.
Desoto State Park Located in Fort Payne, Alabama
Developed by the Civil Conservation Corps, Desoto State Park is located on Lookout Mountain. The park features improved and primitive campgrounds along with multiple indoor accommodations including cabins, chalets and motel rooms. Campsites come with electrical and water hook-ups. Campers also have access to an Olympic-size swimming pool, nature center and hiking trails.
Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama
Directly on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf State Park offers close to 500 modern campsites. Campers take advantage of miles of white sandy beaches for evening walks, beachfront fishing and sunset gazing. Other attractions include the Park Pier, golf course and ten hiking trails through beautiful nature preserves. According to the State Parks website, renovations completed in 2010 will feature a pool house, new tennis courts, nature center and boat docks.
Lake Guntersville State Park in Guntersville, Alabama
Over 350 campsites are located within the large resort area of Lake Guntersville. The main campground and Town Creek Campground include tent-only sites and full hook-up sites for trailers and RVs. Cottages, chalets and rooms at the resort’s inn are also available. A beach complex located next to the campgrounds provides campers with access to swimming and other water activities while Lake Guntersville offers a prime fishing experience.
Lake Lurleen State Park in Coker, Alabama
Named after Governor Lurleen Wallace, Lake Lurleen State Park is located in central Alabama near The University of Alabama. The modern campground features 91 campsites with utility connections and access to swimming, fishing and boating activities. Popular camping attractions include hiking along 19.5 miles of trails, taking a paddleboat ride on Lake Lurleen and fishing.
