Camping at Lake Guntersville State Park in Alabama is much more than simply sleeping outdoors. It is one of 23 state parks in Alabama offering campgrounds for experienced or beginning campers, but it also boasts a resort lodge, championship golf course and numerous other nature activities. Located in northeast Alabama along the Appalachian Mountains, the 6,000-acre state park is a top location for people looking for a place to experience camping in Alabama.
Campsites and Overnight Accommodations at Lake Guntersville
If true camping is on the agenda, the Alabama state park offers two campgrounds. The main campgrounds has over 300 full hook-up sites, while the Towncreek campground features primitive campsites for those looking to sleep in tents. According to the Lake Guntersville website, rates for utility connections are $17.44, for hook-up sites $19.62 and primitive campsites $10.90.
If enjoying the beauty and amenities of the park without camping is desired, the park also features a variety of indoor accommodations. A 112-room hotel provides all the amenities of resort living starting $89 per night. There are also 15 two-bedroom/two-bath cottages along the lake shore available for rent at rates that vary with the seasons. Finally, 19 mountaintop chalets, available at various seasonal rates, overlook the lake and feature two bedrooms and one bath.
Recreational Activities at Lake Guntersville State Park
In addition to camping and choice accommodations, visitors to the state park can enjoy some of Alabama’s best recreational activities throughout the park. An 18-hole championship golf course offers challenging rounds for groups or individuals.
For hiking enthusiasts, 19 trails ranging in levels of difficulty add up to 36 miles of walking areas that all connect together. Divided into groups by different colors, the trails vary in length from one-quarter mile to 3 ½ miles and allow hikers to take in wildlife, beautiful foliage and historic buildings. Along with hiking, trails for horseback riding and biking are also available.
Fishing at Lake Guntersville State Park
The jewel of Lake Guntersville State Park is the 69,000-acre Guntersville Reservoir. The lake offers year-round fishing for sport fishermen and the novice. Whether fly fishing along the lake banks or taking a boat (various types available for rent) out into deeper waters, there is a fishing experience for everyone to enjoy. While the big catches change with the seasons, types of fish found regularly in the lake include Crappie (most prevalent), Bass, White Bass and Bluegill. Fishing fees vary, but children 15 and under fish for free.
